Great Album! Submitted on: 2009-11-19 |

| After rediscovering Richard Marx about a year ago, I was excited to learn that not only did he continue making albums all these years but he was also expecting to release Emotional Remains. I bought this album via his website about a year ago and absolutely love it. It definitely has more of a rock flavor than some of his other albums and like the other reviewers, a few songs stand out more than the others. Yes, his songs are good and some great, but what I find impressive is his voice. His voice has matured since the 80s, but he still has the great qualities. I went to his concert a few months ago and he sings his old songs just as good as before. Another reviewer is interested in hearing Richard Marx sing his old songs. I recommend buying his Duo album, a collaboration with Matt Scannell. In it Richard sings about 4 of his old classics with just his and Matt's guitars. |

Great new album it's a long time Submitted on: 2009-11-18 |

This one is one of the most beautiful album of Richard and I think he has to realize more album because he's a great singer songwriter and producer. It will be great having an album with his great old songs but with a new sounds in 2009. In this album we find You never take me dancing and Should've known better that take new life here.
I suggest to buy it if you are big fans as me.

An album even guys can enjoy without embarassment. Submitted on: 2009-11-01 |

| Judging by his album covers Richard Marx doesn't care about male listeners. Seems to market himself solely as a heart-throb for young girls. But I know guys who like his music too. They're just too embarassed to buy it because of the wimpy covers. That's sad because this album is deeper lyrically and more muscular musically than his previous albums without sacrificing any melody or emotion. Restores my hope that as he gets passed thinking of himself as some kind of 'stud' he will continue to grow as a writer. |

Repeat Offender. Submitted on: 2009-10-31 |

Over the years my opinion about Richard Marx's music has varied. I was 14 when his debut was released in 1987, and I have been reluctantly loyal ever since. His music moved in a more adult contemporary direction in 1997, and he's been languishing there ever since. Richard Marx is not supposed to be adult contemporary schlock, he's supposed to rock a little like "Don't Mean Nothing", "Satisfied", "Take This Heart", etc. True, he does great ballads as well like "Endless Summer Nights", "Right Here Waiting" and "Now And Forever". Yet, his sense of musical direction all but died and dried up after 1994's "Paid Vacation". His last several albums have been extremely bland.
Well that's changed with "Emotional Remains". I know this album was originally released October 2008 along with "Sundown", but I chose to wait for a wide release, which is now. I am aware that Marx had been working with Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, and it shows here. Marx has moved in a more alternative rock direction a la Nickleback, 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park and Creed. This suits Marx's raspy vocals very well, and it is refreshing to hear Marx back in rock mode, updated for the 2000's at last (better late than never).
Still, after repeatedly listening to "Emotional Remains" I am having trouble differentiating one song from the next. Once again Marx has lost that old gift he used to have of mixing things up. Here, the entire album is run aground on the alternative rock sound and little else. The lyrics, like his recent albums, are uninspired and lifeless. There's a handful of tracks that seemed fairly decent like "From The Inside", "Better Or Worse", "Part Of Me", "Through My Veins", "Save Me" and the Kenny Loggins aided "Take You Back". These tracks stood out more than the rest of the new songs, but it is the 2009 version of "Should've Known Better" that truly shines here. That's what I'm talking about--Marx used to write and compose these great melodic songs like "Should've Known Better", and no matter what you do to the song, it's still a great song! Easily the best track here.
Three stars is being generous here because, truthfully, two and a half stars is equal to a letter grade of C, so this album is maybe a C+/B-. Here's how it compares to Marx's other albums:
1987 Richard Marx: Four Stars
1989 Repeat Offender: Three and a Half Stars
1991 Rush Street: Three Stars
1994 Paid Vacation: Four Stars
1997 Flesh & Blood: Two and a Half Stars
2000 Days In Avalon: Two and a Half Stars
2004 My Own Best Enemy: Two Stars
2008 Emotional Remains: Three Stars |
